Bixel Exchange and LinkedIn lead discussion on tech hiring trends
On July 28, Bixel Exchange invited community college faculty and administration to "Industry Insights and Hiring Trends," a professional development workshop hosted at Snap Inc. LinkedIn's Nick DePorter shared industry data highlighting skills and job occupation growth for the region. Attendees also heard from hiring managers and recruiters at Snap Inc., Google, and Headspace on the importance of cultural fit and hiring from all backgrounds, and learned best practices to prepare students for careers in technology and digital media.
Tech Ed Partnerships @ Headspace
On Aug. 4, as part of the L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline initiative, Bixel Exchange partnered with Headspace, a digital service company that provides guided meditation sessions and mindfulness training, to help community college students get a leg up in their pursuit of a job in #techLA. Bixel Exchange brought together a diverse group of students for a tour of Headspace’s inspiring and serenity-invoking offices in Santa Monica, and engaged them in a professional development panel discussion with employees from a variety of backgrounds. Headspace also led focus groups on human-centered design, and emphasized the importance of having diverse teams working together to create products that can serve the world. Kat Yalung joins Kapor Center to talk tech entrepreneurship
On Aug. 4, Bixel Exchange was invited by Kapor Center for Social Impact, a leading authority in diversity, entrepreneurship, community and philanthropy, to a 1st Fridays Summer Series Founders Fireside Chat in Oakland. The event focused on tech entrepreneurs and ecosystems, and had more than 120 attendees. Startup LAunch Director Kat Yalung, Techstars’ Don Loeb and 500 Startups’ Clayton Bryan discussed the essentials in supporting growing tech ecosystems and budding entrepreneurs, best practices in partnerships, and staying true to your culture and diversity as a city. The speakers’ advice for startups seeking funding: articulate your problem, know your strengths and weaknesses, and rally your team. Learn more about the series.

Bixel Exchange celebrates summer with Grid110
On July 20, Bixel Exchange startups and advisors joined Grid110 at Nixon Peabody's Los Angeles office for a summer celebration of the accelerator’s third year. A huge congrats to Miki Reynolds on becoming Grid110’s new executive director! Grid110 has expanded beyond fashion tech, and is launching two new programs this fall: Idea to Prototype (I2P) and the Residency Program. Applications are due by Aug. 31 for an October program kickoff.
