Bixel Startup Launch Company Geroix Debuts at CES
Geroix, a spin-off of Ether2, debuted at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas from Jan 5-8. Founded by David Dietrich and Jonathan Gael, Geroix focuses on making the Internet of Things more accessible by utilizing an end-to-end platform that incorporates chip core, cloud and mobile applications. “The biggest surprise at CES was the broad range of use cases [for the platform] that people kept dreaming up,” said Gael.
Spotlight on … Linda Tadic, founder and CEO of Digital Bedrock, a secure and managed digital preservation service that “brings the cloud down to earth.”
Congrats on Digital Bedrock’s recent launch! After making the jump from digital preservation, what inspired you to start your own company?
I’ve always been the type of person who rather than complain about something, finds a solution. In this case, that instinct translated into forming my own company. Over the years, I saw organizations large and small, and individuals as well, struggle to keep their digital content alive. It’s not so easy as simple storage; digital preservation requires managing the files, making sure they’re healthy, tracking obsolescence, and migration. Doing that work yourself can be an expensive proposition. I saw a need for a preservation service, observed there wasn’t a comparable service on the market, and started Digital Bedrock to offer a low-cost, secure, comprehensive solution to help clients preserve their digital content.
No surprise – raising funds was the hardest challenge. Investors I spoke with were more interested in app-type startups than hard technology. The team decided to stop wasting time and just build it. We were able to get to launch because of the dedication of the team, a few friends and family investors, and revenue from associated consulting work and early adopter deposits.
Lessons you've learned:
I should have started this earlier. We launched with particular target markets in mind, planning to expand into others in phase two. But the phase two markets are telling us that they want our services now. It’s going to be an exciting 2017.
