Hello friend --
Bixel goes to Washington
We’re fresh from our trip east to South By South Lawn -- The White House’s first-ever one-day festival of ideas, art and action, celebrating the spirit of innovation behind President Obama’s TechHire initiative. Several of our Los Angeles High Impact Information Technology, Entertainment & Entrepreneurship, and Communications Hubs (LA HI-TECH) employer partners -- Snap (formerly Snapchat), Riot Games and Mitu – also joined us at the White House. On Monday, we met with U.S. Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith and other TechHire employers from around the country to share insights on growing tech talent, and scaling solutions to close the skills gap. Los Angeles also got some shine in a spotlight panel discussion on the City of Angels as a case study in innovation. You can recap the day's featured panels, or check it out through one reporter's eyes.
Two of the biggest volunteer opportunities this fall are here
Back at home, we're kicking into high gear this fall, seeking new employer partners for two of the largest volunteer opportunities of the year: Principal for a Day on Nov. 4, and the tech career fair and panels at Cash for College on Nov. 18-19. You already know that we strive to bridge the gap between tech employers and schools (shout out to Built in LA!). This equation works, largely because of our amazing partners. These tech employers understand that investments in our schools can lead to a richer talent pool, stronger workforce and overall economic prosperity. Take that first step today and reach out to us. We look forward to getting you started!
Cleantech has a new home in L.A.
This Friday marks the grand opening of downtown Los Angeles' LaKretz Innovation Campus -- a world-class, city-run and funded cleantech innovation facility where entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists and policymakers can collaborate, promote and support the development of clean technologies and L.A.'s green economy. As the tech center of the L.A. Area Chamber, we work with these city agencies, connecting them to the larger tech community for innovative cleantech solutions that result in more jobs and a bigger green economy. Read on about how these unique partnerships spur civic innovation projects in L.A.
How to craft effective sales techniques
Tuesday's "Sales Techniques and Strategies" workshop, co-presented with LA Law Library and led by Bixel advisor Doug Korte, helped startup founders investigate how to develop strategies for reaching sales goals. An effective sales technique begins with first defining the value proposition. "Selling is understanding your lead's business. It's not convincing people to buy the product or service. Understand your business' goals," Korte said. The class also covered how to define your competition, developing a sales and distribution model, and how to manage your sales team.
Thanks to LA Law Library for hosting the workshop!
