Hello friend --
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US!!
This June marks our third year as the technology center of the L.A. Area Chamber! That means that for three years, we've been focused on growing L.A.'s emerging tech ecosystem, through connecting the region's technology entrepreneurs, schools, government and industries, and showing the collective community that we can accomplish so much more when we work together.
Help us celebrate this occasion as we look back on three amazing years! Join us throughout the next month by following and liking us on Twitter and Facebook! Then we want to hear from you, in your own words, on what being part of the Bixel Exchange community means to you (remember to tag @BixelExchange and use #Bixel3)! Don't underestimate the power or reach of your voice; you never know who's listening. An enormous, heartfelt "THANK YOU" to you for being part of our story; we truly could not have done it without you!
South L.A. awarded Promise Zone designation
In a big win for South L.A. residents last week, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) designated the area as one of 15 nationwide urban Promise Zones. The goal of the Promise Zone initiative, created by President Obama in 2013, is to significantly reduce poverty by creating a federal partnership with communities (think competitive federal grant opportunities). The L.A. Area Chamber is proud to be one of the community partners who supported the Los Angeles Trade Technical College's application because it stands to benefit our local economy. Additionally, Bixel Exchange submitted a letter of support to HUD, alongside five other organizations working to expand entrepreneurship and business opportunities for South L.A. residents. Read on in this L.A. Times article.
Thank you, Sacramento
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to have a direct line to state lawmakers? That was a reality for several L.A. startups that joined us for the Chamber’s annual ACCESS Sacramento advocacy trip to discuss the importance of investing in entrepreneurs and small business owners, and establishing better career pathways to technology jobs for students. The group met with various state representatives, including Assembly members Ian Calderon (D-Whittier) and Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) and other prominent members of the Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy.

How California is dealing with diversity in tech
California has a designated Career Technical Education pathways program available to students from middle school through community college to aid in their pursuit of careers in technology. Because of the very population that makes up California’s students, this program should encourage more diversity in the tech industry. So, is it working? What are some of its successes? And what are some of the barriers that still exist to diversifying the industry? Join us June 30 for "Diversity in Tech through Career Pathways" -- our next meeting of the Chamber's Innovation & Technology Council -- featuring Sacramento Mayor-Elect Darrell Steinberg (via Skype), to discuss the bills he authored on career pathways while in the Senate, as well as the issues that surround this topic. RSVP to attend.
Sparking change for L.A. STEM education
