Immigration is always a hot topic here in Los Angeles and especially in the tech community. With President Trump's recent executive order on H-1B visas, it is even more crucial now to understand the impacts on the changes to the visa and how that will affect technology and innovation. The Chamber's Innovation and Technology Council and Bixel Exchange are proud to partner with FWD.us for our upcoming Innovation and Technology Council to understand what the H-1B visa is, the effects of the President's executive order, and what that means for businesses.

Also, in continuation of our efforts to promote technology and innovation here in Los Angeles, we will be discussing our federal legislative agenda for the Chamber's ACCESS Washington, D.C. advocacy trip set for May 22-24.

The Innovation and Technology Council identifies and engages with business clusters that have economic growth potential - including signature, emerging and innovative industry groups. The Internet of Things (IoT) describes a time when everyday items will be connected to the Internet using things like radio-frequency identification, sensors and wireless technology. The concept was once considered futuristic, but IoT has turned into modern conveniences such as smart TVs and home automation, and has enabled remote health monitoring through devices like specialized pacemakers. With these advances come questions regarding privacy and security. How are our government leaders creating policy to manage and encourage IoT? Is it something the government should be involved in?

Join the Council to hear from the California Legislative Technology and Innovation Caucus' Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon and Assemblymember Richard Bloom as they discuss policy surrounding IoT in the State of California.

The Innovation and Technology Council identifies and engages with business clusters that have economic growth potential - including signature, emerging and innovative industry groups. • Demystifying Data in Business

    Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 06:30 PM
Pivotal Labs Santa Monica in Santa Monica, CA

Data Scientist is the "sexiest job of the 21st century", according to Harvard Business Review

"Big data lives in the cloud. It knows what we do." - Pointy-haired boss. Despite the hype surrounding big data and where it's stored, data scientists know that the size of your data doesn't matter. It's all about what you do with it. This workshop represents the first step towards improving your data literacy and seeing through the hype and buzzwords.

Data Science is a core essential for modern businesses yet not all companies or products know what is needed to add a data discipline that will help drive their vision. There are some “must haves” before a business can consider incorporating advanced machine learning techniques and dive into prescriptive analytics, which ultimately improve the bottom line. The Data Scientists at Pivotal Labs help to demystify data science in a workshop covering these topics.

The goal of this workshop is to give you a taste of data science in the context of your business and company. In addition to defining what it actually is, the main tools in the data scientist's toolbox will be introduced through examples and case studies.

  • Bixel Startup Marketing Workshop: From Brand Vision to Product Market Fit

    Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 10:00 AM · $20.00 USD
    TENTEN in Los Angeles, CA

Bixel Exchange advisors Julie Thorne Engels and Lindsey Heisser of TribeMint believe that brand success starts with a clear vision born from a place of passion, idealism and limitless possibilities. This startup workshop provides a neutral environment for entrepreneurs and startup stakeholders to explore and discover the winning strategy and vision for their company brands. However, as early stage startups are all too keenly aware, an inspired vision is only as great as its ability to attract paying customers. Achieving Product Market Fit should be a key milestone on every CEO’s list of top priorities – and all company metrics must be set to measure the conversation rate between a brand’s call to action and their customer acquisition. When these two elements are “married,” one’s brand vision will become validated.

    Agenda:
    • Overview of Brand Vision Process and how it pertains to Product Market Fit
    • Support Creating Brand Visions
    • Peer Review and Feedback
    • Tribemint presents methodology to get from Vision to PMF

Participants will be provided with take-home worksheets on how to take the information learned in the workshop and create the following:
    1. Brand Platform
    2. Mission Statement
    3. Company Values
    4. Brand Filters
    5. Daily Actions associated with validating their Brand Vision because they have achieved product market fit

We selected materials and forms that would be comfortable and durable for dogs, such as a soft, weather-resistant rubber band that integrates the device’s electrical components seamlessly so pets won’t have to feel a thing. We implemented features that make things easy for pet owners; an intuitive clasp allows them to put on, remove, and adjust the collar with one simple mechanism, without pinching their animal’s neck in the process.

With a design that’s simultaneously durable, comfortable, and approachable, the Karten Design team developed the first wearable device to help bridge the communication gap between dogs and the people who love them.

    TruePosture by Adela Health

Adela Health develops cutting-edge wearable, medical and health devices for active posture management, training, and remote monitoring. The devices use patented technology to measure the curvature of the spine very accurately and provide immediate feedback to the user. The devices also send the posture data to smart phones and info centers through Bluetooth for remote monitoring and analysis.

The first application of the technology is a comfortable undershirt embedded with nano-sensors along the spine. It’s called TruePosture and it measures the curvature of the entire spine very accurately. The feedback is in the form of a gentle vibration to remind you to sit up or stand up straight. Free apps for iPhone, Android, and Windows are available for real-time display of spinal positioning.

TruePosture trains for better muscle control, strengthens the muscles and the core and ultimately makes good posture a habit.

Learn from speaker, Stephen Kane, Small Business and Startup Attorney and Bixel Exchange's newest advisor.

    @stephenlkane

    SK_Law_NEW.jpg

Stephen Kane is a Los Angeles based business attorney providing California small businesses and startups with quality legal services at reasonable rates. He can assist you across a broad spectrum of business related legal matters: drafting and reviewing contracts, i.e. employment agreements, business agreements, founder agreements, labor & employment advice and disputes, i.e. employee handbooks, labor commission proceedings, and litigation matters including breach of contract disputes, and advice on incorporating or forming an LLC.

You have a lot of options when hiring a new attorney and attorneys are pretty good at telling you why they're the best person for the job. So what sets him apart? His business experience and approach. He's one of very few practicing attorneys who's also been an entrepreneur and business owner. This gives him the insight he needs to provide you with practical advice rooted in both legal doctrine and real world experience. A great number of business decisions boil down to risk-reward, especially when the law's involved - so rather than tell you what to do he aims to properly equip you with the information you need to make your own business decision.

Daniel joined the FCC from CBS, where he managed various digital media initiatives and helped run the network’s growing mobile business unit. Previously, he helped launch and run a start-up company called Click.TV, which developed technology to help media companies distribute and monetize video content over the Internet, and was acquired by Cisco in 2007. • Emerging Tech Salon - Go Big or Go Home

    Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 11:30 AM
    Los Angeles Athletic Club

LAAC_text_logo_green.gifCorporate partnerships can yield tremendous value for both technology start-ups and big business alike. Yet the success of  these partnerships depends on a variety of different bureaucratic and technical roadblocks. Before you network your way into big meetings with your charming personality, it is important to first build a compelling business case that appeals to corporate executives. The standard assumption by big company executives is that technology startups reaching out have no value. Successful entrepreneurs looking to partner should take the time to:

    1.  Determine the value of corporate partnership for their business.

    2.  Identify the right companies with complementary products or needs for their services/technology.

    3.  Build a compelling case (and product) for partnership that appeal to target partners.

    4.  Connect with the right business and technical decision makers at a target company to efficiently drive a sustainable and mutually beneficial partnership to fruition.

Not sure how to start? Join us and hear from corporate and start-up veterans who have developed and managed these powerful relationships. Case studies, success stories and failures alike will be presented through conversations and a panel discussion.
The Emerging Commerce Council identifies and engages with business clusters that have economic growth potential - including signature, emerging and innovative industry groups. The Council aims to promote policies that will strengthen these industries, elevate their global reach, drive job creation and regional economic prosperity.
